Kristi Kiene - Savannah's Premier Oboe Instructor
kristi_kiene_oboe_playerKristi Kiene has been actively involved as a musician and pedagogue in the Savannah area for over ten years. Her teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in the desire to pass along the knowledge that has been bestowed upon her, and in turn, to instill in her students a lifelong passion for classical music.

Kristi holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance from Ohio Northern University, and a Master of Music in Music Performance from Georgia Southern University. She is also a longtime participant at John Mack Oboe Camp, and is Instructor of Oboe at Armstrong Atlantic State University. Her primary private teachers have been:

  • Patricia Grignet Nott, former Dean of Musicians for the New World Symphony, DMA Yale
  • Patricia Barry, former oboe/English horn of the Savannah Symphony
  • Nathan Hughes, principal oboe Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, BM Cleveland Institute of Music, MM The Juilliard School
  • Rebecca Nagel, instructor of music at University of South Carolina, Columbia and principal oboe South Carolina Philharmonic

In addition, Kristi has also worked with the late John Mack, former principal oboe, Cleveland Orchestra, Jeffrey Rathbun, assistant principal oboe, Cleveland Orchestra, and Linda Strommen, Instructor of Oboe at Indiana University. Kristi has done vast research in the field of pedagogy and uses widely accepted teaching methods to help each student reach his or her potential. Her students have participated in the GMEA District I Honor Band, the Georgia All-State Band, the Lion’s All-State Band, and the Armstrong Youth Orchestra, as well as numerous summer music programs. Former students have received music scholarships to Georgia Southern University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, and University of Georgia.

Kristi is active as a freelance musician and has performed with the Hilton Head Orchestra, The Coastal Symphony of Georgia, Southern Georgia Symphony, and most recently, the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra as well as many other ensembles. She was recently featured as a soloist with the AASU Wind Ensemble. Kristi is also a licensed Kindermusik educator and teaches Kindermusik classes in various locations throughout Chatham and Bryan Counties.
